Update 8/21/2015:

The New York City Council unanimously passed a law last week increasing preventative measures to curb future Legionella outbreaks. The policies enacted includes the mandatory registration and culture testing of all cooling towers within 30 days of passage. It also requires owners develop a monitoring plan including periodic testing for total bacteria and also separate testing for Legionella. Hospitals and residential healthcare facilities (e.g. assisted living) are also required to adopt a Legionella sampling plan for potable water. The required responses for building owners with different tiers of Legionella detected are also included in the bill.

New York city has over 2,000 cooling towers and they are all now required to be tested for Legionella bacteria.

The following buildings have been added to the outbreak zone:

• Concourse Plaza, 198 E. 161st. St.
• Opera House Hotel, 436 E. 149 St.
• Lincoln Hospital, 234 E. 149th St.
• Streamline Plastics, 2950 Park Ave.
• Daughters of Jacob Nursing Home, 1160 Teller Ave.
• Post Office, 558 Grand Concourse
• Verizon, 117 E. 167th St.
• Bronx Housing Courts, 1118 Grand Concourse
• NYC Department of Education 455 Southern Boulevard. Also called Samuel Gompers High School.
• DHS PATH Intake Center, 151 East 151st Street.
• Bronx Hall of Justice, 245 E 161ST Street

Seven buildings outside the outbreak zone have also tested positive, according to the governor’s office.  The location of four of those seven buildings was made public. The 230 East 123rd Street building is in Manhattan.

• 1201 Lafayette Ave.
• 230 East 123rd St.
